I have always had a strong belief that IBD
does an excellent job of
screening the very best quality growth
stocks.
Whenever new data comes in (e.g. higher market price or fundamental data changed) and the
screen does not meet all required criteria anymore, the
stock goes to the «out» -
stock list and is removed.
Certainly, some
screening software (notably, AAII's
Stock Investor Pro) can
do this, but it takes a fair amount of additional effort to set it up.
Given many value plays are off the beaten path, what
do you find are the best resources to discover potential investments which fit your criteria (other than, say,
stock screens on certain variables)?
This
screen was not run using the 200 day moving average requirement and all qualifying
stocks were held (in other words, I
did not limit the number of
stocks as in some examples from my previous two articles).
It has its usefulness if you're just looking to
do a simple
stock screen.
When I
did buy
stocks, I never used any
screening tools because I don't think I need a tool to tell me what to buy if I only buy a few
stocks in a year.
Those metrics probably don't look too different from the ones used in smart - beta ETFs, with one key difference: active managers tend to invest in a smaller number of
stocks (somewhere between 20 and 100 in most cases), whereas the passive ETF mechanically buys all the
stocks that pass the
screen in a passive fashion.
In answering this question, early academic research focused primarily on the first step of
screening as academics
did not know what
stocks value investors actually buy, but they
did know that they tended to buy from the low P / E or P / B group of
stocks.
While the technical aspects of value investing (
screening for and valuing low P / E or P / B
stocks) are well understood and documented, there has been no attempt to understand the role that an investor's individual character plays in investing success even though anecdotal evidence
does point to the importance of character and temperament.
One thing that is a major holdback for me to investigate further into foreign net - nets is the inability to
screen and review
stocks as you
did.
