Since that announcement in January of 2015, Aetna has
returned an annualized 29 % to its
stockholders including dividends,
compared with 11.1 % for the S&P 500.
The company's
return on capital employed was very low — it was 2.8 %,
compared to 6.8 % at Alcoa and 10.3 % at Nucor — and total
stockholder returns fell, underperforming the S&P 500 Steel Index.
