A grass roots effort, the North Carolina Coalition for Humane Euthanasia (NCCHE), has been working to
stop the
use of carbon monoxide
gas chambers as well as other cruel and inhumane methods
of killing shelter animals in the state.
The plaintiffs in the case, Morton and Robinson, asked the court for an injunction, to require the state to comply with the law and
stop issuing licenses to any new shelters that would
use gas chambers and to refuse to renew licenses
of current shelters that kill animals by illegally gassing them.
HB 4844 would also extend euthanasia restrictions to commercial breeders, and
stop the
use of homemade
gas chambers by private enterprises according to Ledy VanKavage
of the ASPCA as quoted in the Pantagraph.
Though as ALC reported in Part 2
of its series on NC CO
gas chambers, it appeared Gaston County would
stop using the device, it has not done so.
Since Animal Law Coalition last reported on the status
of the
use of animal
gas chambers in Ohio, a number
of counties have
stopped using the medieval torture devices to kill shelter animals.
Brunswick County Commissioners refused even to consider a petition in September from residents to
stop the
use of the CO
gas chamber.
In North Carolina the battle to
stop the cruelty in shelters from the
use of CO
gas chambers is one step forward and two steps back.
