When ordinary
citizens complain

Even though The Amina Profile works as a cyber-thriller of sorts, I think it's much more wide - reaching than that, a
story about online identity, but also
about the danger of media - constructed narratives, one that manages to salute both
citizen journalists, but also establishment outlets like NPR.
The biopic from director Oliver Stone tells the
story of the former CIA employee Edward Snowen (Joseph Gordon - Levitt) who became a whistleblower when he leaked classified information
about the NSA to the media that revealed the agency was spying on unknowing
citizens of the United States.
Not much is known
about the
story but gamers will take the role of «Charlie», described as a low class
citizen is a cyberpunk-esque society.
The film was initially inspired by an article Heineman read
about an American vigilante group in Arizona that militantly patrols the border with Mexico, which its members believe is far too penetrable, but as he prepared to investigate this
story, he encountered another article — this one
about the massive power of the Mexican drug cartel Knights Templar, and a local
citizens vigilante group calling itself Autodefensas.
And while the film is sort of
about this war of ideas, propaganda, information from these
citizen journalists and ISIS» slick propaganda, it's also a
story of immigrants, an exodus
story, of Man's understanding, coming to terms, and dealing with the cumulative effects of trauma... also, rising nationalism both in Germany and around the world.
His freshman effort was a
story of tragedy and triumph — and one that brought
about immense public, private, and academic discourse on the state of America, as experienced by its second - class
citizens.
Autodefensa has elements of a populist uprising, and the grisly sights of such things as heads of decapitated victims lined up like ducks in a shooting gallery or a woman's
story about the barbarous murder of a little child can not help but win sympathy for their argument for self - defense — especially when the Mexican government is, at best, ineffective when it comes to protecting its
citizens.
Not that you'd know that from the movies, where senior
citizens are routinely relegated to supporting roles in
stories about young and sexy characters played by bankable movie stars.
The canniest and most overwhelming documentary to date
about the ongoing Syrian civil war, Matthew Heineman's City of Ghosts contrasts the
story of a heroic group of
citizen journalists with a grim view of the international community they desperately need to galvanize.
And if this
story weren't bad enough, there is a far more pernicious plotline developing, one
about which most
citizens and education stakeholders are completely unaware.
There are so seldom
stories written
about true love striking «senior
citizens», or in this case, two mature widowed individuals that are clearly battling both their own personal grief over their lost spouses as well as their own loneliness.
In fact, he liked the
stories that I wrote
about, regardless of my being a near leech on our finances and an almost second class
citizen.
While it starts out as a great
story about secret agents and special ops teams,
about double crosses and not knowing who to trust, it quickly evolved into a laundry list of ways that different government agencies with obscure acronyms had the technological means and the legal ability to spy on every single
citizen.
When English readers want to understand what it was
about — how people lived and died inside a cult of personality that committed unspeakable crimes against its
citizens — I hope they will turn to this carefully documented
story.
In light of Edward Snowden's recent revelations
about the NSA's snooping activities, this riveting
story of government surveillance is a must - read for anyone who's concerned
about privacy and what information government can and will find out
about law - abiding
citizens.
