I always struggle with
stories that
toe the
line between original and weird, and this is one.
Chazelle's script rides a fine
line between intensity and levity, as well as success and failure, by taking the
story to places not many are expecting, but it's right where things need to go to keep these characters — and subsequently the audience — on their
toes.
«La La Land» isn't the most original
story — it borrows from all the classics, like «Singin» in the Rain,» «An American in Paris» and «A Star is Born» — but while the film treads very familiar ground, Chazelle freshens it up with some delightful song - and - dance numbers that attempt to redefine the movie musical, including one where the two lovers literally dance among the stars that
toes the
line between fantasy and reality.
The
story line is completely unique with enough twists and turns to keep you on your
toes.
This of course tells only half the
story, and the scientists in question are
toeing the
line and not painting targets on their backs.
