They fired
straight laser pulses into the thunderclouds 10 times every second, hoping that the high energy
plasma channels that form in the laser pulse's wake would trigger lightning strikes, which would then travel along the
plasma channels down to the ground, like a train running along railway tracks (Optics Express, DOI: 10.1364 / OE.16.005757).
