While year after year we praise the powers of new paint colours and
wallpapers and boast the revival of furnishings and styles of yore, 2017 is
stripping it all away and taking a good
look at what's underneath — the architectural design of the home.
Just
look at my kitchen, green cupboard, green and white
striped wallpaper, yes indeed I do love green.
Horizontal
striped wallpaper patterns or painted stripes on the wall stretch the space, making room
look wider and more spacious.
It would be a shame to update the bath to a «2009»
look, only to have it
look dated in 5 years (like the
striped 1985
wallpaper).
I did some «budget - friendly» renovating of my kitchen 2 yrs ago,
stripping old
wallpaper, putting in the subway tile backsplash, adding bright white beadboard halfway up walls and on the existing white cabinet ends, painting the rest of the walls soft white (sometimes
looks very very pale yellow).
Stenciling would give the
look of
wallpaper, which I love, but then I'd never have to
strip it off!
A largely white
wallpaper helps marry the different elements in this
look as fine golden
strips, slim silver rays and spindly lamp stands all sit together in the entrance hall without
looking busy or clashing.

Although we didn't start over on our upstairs bathroom, first we
stripped wallpaper off of old painted plaster, except for what we didn't get off because it
looked like it was helping hold the paint / plaster together, then we used joint compound for a very heavy texture to hold the walls together and cover the lead - based paint.

look to the space.
