They must be balanced by
strong moral and cultural institutions, such as families, schools, churches and other
voluntary associations that serve the common good.
A church that is the largest
voluntary association in the country; a church whose universal pastor has, over the past decade, definitively answered Stalin's cynical query about the pope's divisions; a church that is, demographically, at its
strongest historical point of leverage in American society — this is a church that would seem well positioned to seize what Richard John Neuhaus and others have seen as a possible «Catholic moment» in American history, pro Deo et patria.
