In his books (including that
on structural family therapy techniques, which Fishman co-authored), he compared such learning with that of a Samurai warrior (though he could have equally used Aikaido as an example).

This concept, when used
within structural family therapy, posits that we draw on the same stance of respect, collaboration and consideration when meeting with families, individuals, professional networks and in supervision and training.
In considering the achievement of such developmental tasks with regard to the family's role as a cultural transmitter,
structural family therapy sees the executive aspects of family life as being the most important.
Understanding the background of those who
pioneered structural family therapy helps makes sense of the model they developed, because the model is pragmatic in orientation, has a concern for family organisation, and places emphasis on activity as much as on talking and reflection.
For example, psychodynamic theory had not been taught to
structural family therapy trainees in Philadelphia, nor to those learning the McMaster model in Hamilton, Ontario (although many of their trainees were quite familiar with psychodynamic concepts).
I approach couples counseling from an integrative perspective using Gottman, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Bowen Family Systems, and

They maintain competence in explaining literature and implementing practice through best - and systemic - interventions across multiple fields (e.g., Family Therapy, Medicine, Nursing), and through a variety of theories and models as they interface with systemic health concerns (e.g., motivational interviewing with patients who wish to stop smoking,
structural family therapy + psychoeducation for adolescents living with diabetes).
The model receiving the most attention with regard to behavioral intervention with Latino adolescents and families is ecodevelopmental theory, which incorporates elements of

The original position taken
in structural family therapy was that in enmeshed families, whether it's a toddler testing out the safety of a three - metre distance from her mother's knees early in the family life cycle, or an adolescent daughter struggling later with the depression of a rejected love affair, the capacity of each to tolerate anxiety or despair may be threatened.
Families of the Slums (1967) recounts the Wiltwyck experience and outlines the basic principles of what eventually became known
as Structural Family Therapy: Faulty family organization supports symptomatic behaviors, and the purpose of therapy is to disrupt dysfunctional family patterns and nurture healthier ones.
Dr. Minuchin was a primary developer
of Structural Family Therapy that arose from work with inner city youth and their families in the 1960's.
