I think a lot
of people assume here that her writing this was to foster «atheism» when in reality it was about her surviving and thriving... finding her «own» path within the the highly dogmatic and
structured religious organization known as AA.
The study
of the
structures of religious groups should be carried on without prejudice in favor
of one or the other principle
of organization, e.g., the charismatic as against the hierarchical, or vice versa — and application
of the general methodological requirement discussed above.
Collectively they are the core
of the tangled network
of business,
religious, trade union, military, and political
organizations and relations which together constitute the power
structure in the world.
The bottom line is that every
organization and institution — whether political, economic, or
religious, from large corporations and entire nations to small country churches and individual households — have a «tenor» or a «way
of doing things» that define, characterize, guide, and even justify the actions and attitudes
of that particular
structure.
This meant for the earliest disciples a basic renunciation
of the struggle for existence, implemented by a complete break with the power
structure of society: the automatic prerogatives
of the chosen people, the security
of the holy tradition, the comfort
of established
religious organization and clergy — all such props, controlled by man and as a result constantly available to him for securing his existence, were in principle eliminated.
Social agencies, welfare groups,
religious organizations, commercial concerns, all have marched into our communities — especially our inner - city communities — with preconceived notions
of superimposing their
structures upon a community,
of afflicting a community with a
structure that was developed in some think tank without consulting any significant forces within the community itself.
The Churchtank»» a steepled church
structure fused to the base
of a tank»» gives the immediate impression
of powerful
religious organizations working over the military - industrial complex.
