SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 1 - Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Marissa Mayer, three months into a nascent effort to revamp
the struggling Web company, could be back in the office in one week, following the birth of her first child on Sunday.

company has long
struggled to overcome two big challenges: the industrywide drop in display advertising that has traditionally been its primary revenue source and the distraction inherent in trying to excel at many different things, from news and fantasy sports to
web searches and email.
As Yahoo's chief executive, Ms. Mayer acquired more than 20
companies, but ultimately
struggled to turn around the
web pioneer.
Perhaps predictably, there were no definitive conclusions, but there appeared to be agreement that as the World Wide
Web celebrates its 25th anniversary, internet users of all stripes are
struggling with a dilemma: If private internet
companies are watching us, shouldn't someone be watching them?
But the Barry Diller - owned
company's continued
struggle with search, along with the still dismal online ad market in general, pushed the Media & Advertising unit, which includes Ask.com, Fun
Web Products, Dictionary.com and Citysearch, down 10 percent to $ 168.6 million.
Verizon reportedly is close to a deal to buy the core
Web assets of Yahoo for US$ 5 billion, which would end a months - long process of jockeying over the future of the
struggling company.
Google has announced that it will gradually phase out support for Chrome
web apps on Windows, Mac and Linux - a move that comes as the
company struggles to find a new niche after the apps, which offered unique functions that the open
web couldn't provide at the time the apps were conceived, have become mainstream.
