I know most people now think
paper books are going
to go the way of the Tazmanian cat, but I'm not 100 % convinced it won't
stick around in some fashion for years
to come.
There are endless possibilities for ebooks
to make reading more accessible and immersvie than ever, but as long as ebooks try
to be
paper books, they will remain
stuck in an uncanny valley of disappointment.
In a world where traditional publishers are still basically brokering
to sell and warehouse
paper rather than
books (i.e.
sticking to an antiquated business model in a market where ebooks are rapidly growing
to be the majority of sales and shouldn't be ignored), this is a landmark deal.
I've either got my nose
stuck in a
paper book or I'm looking at a laptop screen all day at my job so reading on my commute home doesn't appeal
to me like it once did.

to publish my first
book Maggie's Shadow and now available everywhere in print and electronic form... i did all the work myself and when
stuck asked for help and Lulu's response was almost immediate and either the following day or the next providing invaluable insight on how
to proceed ~ and free... i'm now marketing myself and have already agreed
to place my
book on consignment at one indie bookshop and with others ive yet
to call... my library opened their doors
to introduce me as a local writer and the local
paper just printed the event... little by little its happening but it requires diligence and a willingness
to promote one's work... i learn something new everyday and plan
to submit my
book to many of the self published contests that are now available... i would recommend Lulu
to other authors tired of waiting for an agent
Certainly a
paper book would have been a more pleasant experience, but there were advantages
to portable reading: I could whip it out of my pocket while
stuck on the bus, and read under the covers by the greenish back - lit glow.
The Kindle so far is winning as I want something
to read
books on, but I would like the advantage of a colour screen and all the bells and whistles that come with the Fire but as it looks like Amazon won't be bringing the good stuff
to the UK any time soon I might
stick to good old fashioned
paper for a little bit longer.
