Students in 3rd through 12th
grade during the Fall of 2012 were shown a copy of Bo Bartlett's
painting, The Box.
During the first semester of the study, we showed all 3rd - through 12th -
grade students a
painting they had not previously seen, Bo Bartlett's The Box.
As part of the study we are also asking
students in
grades 3 - 12 to write short essays in response to
paintings that they have probably never seen before to assess how they critically analyze a new work of art after they've had a school tour of an art museum.
The researchers measured critical thinking skills by asking all
students to write a short essay on a
painting they had not seen before, which was then
graded and scored blindly using a rubric.
