Democracy tells the story of seven St. Louis college
students who are battling injustice, raising awareness
about police brutality and fighting for real reform in their community and within the local education system.
You know, people sometimes say that when
students from China come here and study and they go back, that they are bringing back western ideas, bringing back, you know, values of human rights and
democracy, but that's partly true and definitely I have seen a lot of people come back with these kinds of ideas, well others come back and they have had such a negative experience in the United States that they become defensive

Students listen to a podcast to learn
about two enslaved people who successfully sued for their freedom, and reflect on what their cases illuminate
about democracy today.

students that in this lesson they will be learning
about how Germany went from being a
democracy to becoming a dictatorship.
Schools might teach
about democracy, but what messages are
students actually receiving?
In particular, the material in this lesson provides opportunities for
students to consider the messages they receive in school
about their responsibilities as citizens, and to evaluate the role of civic education in a
democracy.
Then, explain to
students that through this timeline they will learn
about how the success of the Nazi Party in the 1932 elections put Germany on the path from
democracy to becoming a dictatorship.
The civic engagement programs are also needed to develop responsible and competent citizens that are knowledgeable
about the principles and practices of
democracy, provide
students with opportunities to apply formal civic learning in the classroom to community service projects, and equip the
students with skills to participate responsibly as engaged members of their communities.

How better for
students to learn
about civics and government and the power of voice than to actively engage in
democracy?
School reform is just as much
about the three Cs: curriculum (what knowledge and skills
students actually learn); counseling (how we prepare young people, professionally and socially, for adult life); and civics (whether we teach
students how to participate in American
