The temporary exhibit, titled «Parkland 17,» also featured enlarged photos of the 14
students and three educators, along with facts

gun homicides) and a phone booth labeled «Ring Your Rep,» with a direct line to Congress.

As important as the
students have been, however, the debate
about reducing
gun violence can't stop at schools.
Thousands of
students from
about 50 schools across South Florida mounted demonstrations and protests Wednesday — one week after the Parkland school shooting — calling for laws to be changed to curb
gun violence.
«My ninth - grade year, I had
about two friends that died from
gun violence,» Northwestern
student Jamesha Corker said.
On Friday,
about 100
students from South Broward High School walked out of school to protest
gun violence, carrying signs that said «Do Something» and «Protect our Kids, Not Your
Guns.»
Spradlin, who is the president of the Young Democrats Club on campus, said there were three reasons the
students participated in the walkout: first was to honor the lives of the victims; second was to show Congress that
students care
about the issue of
gun violence; and third was to take direct action by registering
students to vote and writing to members of Congress to demand change.
In between frantic text messages to family and friends, some of the
students expressed their thoughts
about gun violence and the change needed in the United States.
Like their peers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where a gunman last month shot 17
students and faculty to death, the Excel
students have strong thoughts and feelings
about the impact of
gun violence, and the changes they want to see locally and nationwide.
Students at Excel Academy in West Baltimore haven't experienced a school shooting, but have lost seven schoolmates to street
gun violence in the last year and a half, and can share stories going back decades
about the outsize role
guns have played in their lives and the impact it has had on them.
As
students walked out of schools across the country Wednesday to protest
gun violence, a Senate hearing examined law enforcement agencies» failure to heed multiple warnings
about the Parkland, Fla., man accused of killing 17 people at a high school, as well as the long record of failed
gun control measures in Congress.
Since the shooting, several of the high school's
students have spoken out
about gun violence and have asked politicians to act.
Students learn
about and discuss strikes by teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Kentucky, and consider how they are connected to
student - led protests over
gun violence.
