Like their peers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High
School in Parkland, Fla., where a gunman last month shot 17
students and faculty to death, the Excel
students have strong thoughts and feelings
about the impact of
gun violence, and the changes they want to see locally and nationwide.
Students at Excel Academy
in West Baltimore haven't experienced a
school shooting, but have lost seven schoolmates to street
gun violence in the last year and a half, and can share stories going back decades
about the outsize role
guns have played
in their lives and the impact it has had on them.
As
students walked out of
schools across the country Wednesday to protest
gun violence, a Senate hearing examined law enforcement agencies» failure to heed multiple warnings
about the Parkland, Fla., man accused of killing 17 people at a high
school, as well as the long record of failed
gun control measures
in Congress.
