When the St. Albans City School initially discovered VocabularySpellingCity, teachers were looking for an engaging way to help
students learn vocabulary both at school and at home in a variety of subject areas.
However, rarely will
students learn vocabulary from just these, in my experience; they need to work with the vocabulary.
Using Realia to Teach English Language Learners (Grades K - 12): Help
students learn vocabulary in context by using images of different shoes in the Smithsonian collections to inform descriptive or compare - and - contrast conversations, encourage students to make personal connections, or explore the history of objects.

student world (slang, music, sports, etc), along with that of my more specialized disciplinary concerns, builds helpful bridges for
