I am a firm believer that when
students respect teachers and teachers respect students that it can only benefit learning.
The bond is constituted through common interest in the object of study;
the student respects the teacher as the possessor and mediator of certain crafts, a body of knowledge or an accomplished skill; he considers him worthy when this treasure is great and significant and when the teacher is willing to give of it freely.
While 79 percent of Americans said
students respected teachers when they were in school, only 31 percent believe students respect teachers today, according to a Harris Poll of 2,250 American adults.
Parents of school - aged children, who might be in the best position to judge the environment of today's schools, tended to mirror the opinions of the group as a whole, except when asked about parents and
students respecting teachers.
