The Harvard School of Public Health investigated the
transition to healthier school lunches among
students in
grades 1 through 8 in four schools.
However, evidence presented in the report sheds doubt these large test score increases: according to an Education Writers Association study, when neighborhood schools were restored, the superintendent in Oklahoma City reduced the number of low - achievers taking the standardized tests by increasing the number of
students retained (or «flunked») and implementing
transition grades (in which
students repeat all or part of the previous
grade).
Joan Wilson, a sixth
grade teacher whose class was filmed for the movie, said that as a former fifth
grade teacher she realized some
students» anxieties about the middle - school
transition ran deep.
The

grades to give a second chance to
students who stand to flunk under the district's tough new promotion policy.
In order to examine whether charter - school effects might be attributable to eliminating the

Despite their higher levels of achievement in 10th
grade compared with 8th
grade, many
students may be academically ill - prepared for the
transition to high school, data from a massive federal survey suggest.
It was not appropriate for teaching
students who entered first
grade reading, however minimally, because they would have to learn the new alphabet, then
transition back to the standard alphabet.
Ninth
grade centers, where
students are moved out of the large high school for the
transition year, also seem to help.
It contains a total of 99 sight words (there are three volumes * and a total of 20 stories), which are repeated frequently to enable the
student to make a smooth
transition from pre-primer level to first

The researchers found that in 1998, about 38 percent of the eighth graders sent to the district's
Transition Centers — alternative schools for
students who turn 15 before graduating from eighth
grade — were still unable to raise their scores to meet the promotion cutoff after being retained and attending summer school again this August.
Transitions Focus of Inclusion Week
Transitions between
grades and schools are difficult for many
students, but the challenges increase for
students with disabilities or limited English skills.
This fun activity — easily adapted to any
grade — makes a great «bellringer» activity for settling down
students at the start of the school day, immediately after lunch, or as a
transition after any other activity.
Similarly, across the country at the Caesar Rodney School District in Delaware, Alleyne worked closely with administrators to understand whether the development of a freshmen academy helped
students transition to ninth
grade and keep them on track to graduate.
For example, Mizelle (1995) found that
students who stayed together with the same teachers through sixth, seventh, and eighth
grades and experienced more hands - on, life - related learning activities, integrated instruction, and cooperative learning groups were more successful in their
transition to high school than were
students from the same school who had a more traditional middle school experience.
Research has found, however, that when middle school
students took part in a high school
transition program with several diverse articulation activities, fewer
students were retained in the
transition grade (Mac Iver, 1990).
One way to educate families about the importance of the 9th -
grade transition might be to require that
students and their parents are given information on colleges» entrance expectations - minimum coursework requirements, GPA, etc. - preferably as early as the middle
grades, if not earlier, but absolutely at the beginning of high school.
A «Big Sister / Brother» Program that begins in eighth
grade and continues through ninth
grade, a spring social event for current and incoming high school
students, and writing programs where eighth - graders correspond with high school
students are just a few ways that
transition programs can provide
students social support.
We also find that the
transition to high school causes a small drop in
student achievement for all
students who make this
transition (as distinct from those in schools with 6 — 12
grade configurations).
An LEP
student who concentrates exclusively on learning English in the 1st
grade will expend less of his available schooling time to clear the fluency threshold than if the English
transition were postponed until the 6th
grade.
In the same way, we compare the learning trajectories of
students entering high school in
grade 9 to those of
students who attend K — 12, 6 — 12, or 7 — 12 schools in order to determine whether high - school
transitions affect achievement.
Investigating the
transition to high school, we find that
students moving to a new high school between
grades 8 and 9 suffer a small drop in achievement of 0.03 standard deviations in math and 0.04 standard deviations in reading (relative to those in
grade 6 — 12 schools or schools with another configuration that requires no
transition at this point).
Students who again failed to meet the standard were required to repeat the
grade, with the exception of 15 - year - olds who attended newly created «
transition» centers.
Students who make the
transition at
grade 7 experience even larger drops in their achievement of 0.22 and 0.15 standard deviations in math and reading, respectively.
At most Bard locations,
students essentially complete ninth and 10th
grade and then
transition to a two - year, tuition - free college curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences.
So, the Singapore math at the Heschel School is not the Common Core - arranged version and the Heschel School had the sense to
transition its
students into Singapore math a couple
grade levels at a time, not foolishly impose upon all
grades (K - 5) at once.
It also, though, was crafted to emphasize the importance of developing reading skills by third
