study of the cost effectiveness of alternative planned places of birth in England in women at low risk of complications before the onset of labour, we found that the cost of intrapartum and after birth care, and associated related complications, was less
for births planned at home, in a free standing midwifery
unit, or in an alongside midwifery
unit compared with planned births in an obstetric

For reasons explained in the cohort
study report, obstetric
units contained more women in whom complicating conditions were an unexpected observation, which suggests that the risk profile of low risk women varied between the settings.

Studies comparing human milk from preterm mothers with that from term mothers suggest that these immunologic benefits may be even greater
for preterm infants because secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), lysozyme, lactoferrin, and interferon are found in greater concentrations in preterm human milk compared with term milk.2 — 4 Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants do not benefit from the transplacental transfer of maternal immunoglobulins that occurs primarily after 34 weeks of gestation.5 These infants are exposed to abundant pathogenic organisms during neonatal intensive care

A secondary analysis of data from the prospective observational Birthplace in England
study found that immersion was associated with significant reductions in antepartum transfers to hospitals

A 2011 BMJ
study of 65,000 English births found that home birth carried a higher risk
for the babies of first - time mothers - but
for second - time mothers giving birth there was no difference in the risk to babies between home, a midwife - led
