A review
of twenty
studies on the adult lives
of antisocial adolescent girls found higher mortality rates, a variety
of psychiatric problems,
dysfunctional and violent
relationships, poor educational achievement, and less stable work histories than among non-delinquent girls.23 Chronic problem behavior during childhood has been linked with alcohol and drug abuse in adulthood, as well as with other mental health problems and disorders, such as emotional disturbance and depression.24 David Hawkins, Richard Catalano, and Janet Miller have shown a similar link between conduct disorder among girls and adult substance abuse.25 Terrie Moffitt and several colleagues found that girls diagnosed with conduct disorder were more likely as adults to suffer from a wide variety
of problems than girls without such a diagnosis.26 Among the problems were poorer physical health and more symptoms
of mental illness, reliance on social assistance, and victimization by, as well as violence toward, partners.
Compared with control children, they had more difficulties with friendships, 29 poorer theory
of mind, 16 difficulties labelling and understanding the causes
of common emotions, 16 increased fantasy proneness and difficulty distinguishing fantasy and reality, 31 increased negative attributional style,
dysfunctional attitudes, rumination and self - criticism.32 They also experience difficulties in the mother — child
relationship, with four
studies reporting high levels
of disrupted attachment styles, 21, 29, 31, 32 and in role - play scenarios elevated levels
of role - reversal with parents, fear
of abandonment, and negative expectations
of parents.31 These factors are known to put children at risk
of poor mental health outcomes, and indeed, this appears to be the case.
In this
study published in the «Journal
of Consulting and Clinical Psychology» in 2006, 143 adolescents were surveyed, seeking
relationships between
dysfunctional parent - child interactions — including withdrawal, anger and autonomy struggles as well as dependent social
relationships — to determine if these strained
relationships lead to increased rates
of depression.
The
study concluded that the
relationship between mothers and children may alter the way
dysfunctional attitudes and self - esteem develop, which may lead to disordered eating or other types
of self - punishment.
These data are in accordance with a previous
study from our group in which the role
of attachment on children's migraine features and psychological profile were explored (14); in this previous paper, the hypothesis that a
dysfunctional relationship between children and their mothers could be a vulnerability factor in young migraineurs was suggested.
The
study of these individual qualities may provide information on potential protective factors to help them even in at - risk contexts (Camisasca et al., 2013) and to direct intervention programs aimed to disrupt the intergenerational cycle
of dysfunctional relationships.
