There is a reoccurring trend in some early childhood
education studies: disadvantaged children who attend preschool arrive at
kindergarten more intellectually and emotionally prepared than peers who have had no preschool.
In a
study released in July 2015 that examined nearly 20 years of data from the Fast Track Research Project, researchers found that teacher - rated social competence in
kindergarten consistently and significantly predicted outcomes in
education, employment, criminal justice, substance use, and mental health into adulthood.
Our
study investigated, first, developmental gains in children's language competence, social support seeking, and self control following the transitions to
kindergarten and school; second, whether native Germans, ethnic German repatriates, Russian Jewish and Turkish migrants differed in developmental gains following these transitions; and third, whether differences in mother's

Similarly, her recent
study of the use of
kindergarten entry assessments generated important insights into the conditions and supports necessary for these assessments to be effective at improving student learning; these findings are helping the U.S. Department of
Education to provide better technical assistance and states to develop and refine their own
kindergarten entry assessment processes.
