Breeders believe the variety orginated from uncontrolled mating between the traditional / older -
style Siamese and black street cats.
Although the extreme type of Siamese is favored in the show ring, the old
style Siamese (Appleheads) with their round heads and stocky bodies are still popular as pets.
To create the breed, cat fanciers crossed traditional Applehead -
style Siamese with blue or black bicolored American Shorthairs.

Because modern show type
Siamese have been bred to such an extreme slender body
style, there has been a movement over recent years by some breeders to return to the original more moderate
Siamese body
style.
There are also two
styles to a
Siamese cat: the traditional, or apple - headed with a more compact, robust body type.
Oriental Longhairs feature a long, lithe and elegant,
Siamese -
style body and a long and silky coat in a range of colours.
