There's a certain class of low - budget indie filmmaking that's become almost its own recognizable
style — full of ordinary people just trying to find happiness in unorthodox ways, hand - held close - up
shots, montages of
locations (easily recognized if you live in the area where they're
shot, but not particularly tied to the story, which could take place anywhere) with light music underneath, a tendency to shift focus amateurishly (though I think often on purpose as part of the
style), a lot of contemplative pauses and awkward conversations.

Though Altman's films compare with Coppola's as chamber music does with grand opera, their work in the 1970s exemplifies what ultimately became the prevailing
style of American film direction in that era: maverick resistance to studio - imposed time and budget constraints, insistence on directorial authorship, reliance on
location shooting, use of improvisational acting, an emphasis on ensemble playing rather than star performances, Fordian gatherings — weddings, church services, parties, dinners — as exponents of group character (both Altman and Coppola had Catholic upbringings), and a revisionist approach to the mythic archetypes of the Hollywood genre film.

Shot sequentially and on
location in a Victorian prison in Belfast, with a shaky but minutely calibrated camera
style, in at times barely intelligible British prison slang (which actually bolsters the primal impact of the film), Starred Up is no mere depiction but a jolting immersion in the claustrophobic mix of violence and vulnerability that is prison life, and it's powered by Jack O'Connell's riveting performance as violent criminal Eric Love.
The relationships and events amount to a credible portrait of modern city and family life, but it's the intimate, improvised
shooting style (16 mm, natural light, all on
location) and Michael Nyman's evocative, memorable score (this often feels like a film made to music) that define the film and give it the sense of immediacy and compassion that make it so enduring.
