These great quakes often take place at
subducting tectonic plate boundaries, where one plate thrusts beneath another plate, as is the case off the coast of Chile and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
A new study suggests that instead of a plume of hot mantle that extends down to Earth's core, the real culprit is
a subducting tectonic plate that began sinking beneath North America hundreds of millions of years ago.

SASMEX's main focus is on earthquakes originating in the subduction zone off the southern coast of Mexico, where the Cocos
tectonic plate
subducts below the North American Plate.
The Andes were formed by
tectonic activity whereby earth is uplifted as one plate (oceanic crust)
subducts under another plate (continental crust).
The complex regional
tectonic activity includes movement of three plates: the Caribbean plate that is
subducting or being forced beneath Colombia in the north; the Panama block or Panama plate that is colliding with Colombia in the central part of the country; and the Nazca plate, which is an oceanic plate that is
subducting beneath the southern part of Colombia from the Pacific.
That's because the rising magma that produced the lavas probably mixed with upper mantle rocks, which have been contaminated with isotopically heavy surface water that got dragged down by
subducting slabs of
tectonic plates.
At subduction zones such as these, an oceanic
tectonic plate sinks (
subducts) into the Earth's interior, the mantle.
On the hot young Earth, the outer layer was too weak and soft for plate
tectonics to operate until the upper mantle cooled enough to allow sections of crust to slip under each other, or
subduct, at collision zones some 3.2 to 2.5 billion years ago.
Java is part of a volcanic island arc, formed when one
tectonic plate
subducts below another.
How much did they affect the ability of the now cooling crust to actually form plates and start to
subduct and make plate
tectonics?
Subduction zones are areas where one
tectonic plate dives or «
subducts» beneath another plate.
Both events occurred along a subduction zone, an area where a
tectonic plate dives or «
subducts» beneath an adjacent
tectonic plate.
The most threatening earthquakes in Cascadia are those associated with the Cascadia subduction zone, which is the
tectonic plate boundary between the
subducting oceanic Juan de Fuca, Gorda, and Explorer Plates and the over-riding continental North America Plate.
In contrast to the constant crustal movement seen on Earth, Venus is thought to undergo periodic episodes of plate
tectonics, in which the crust is
subducted rapidly within a few million years separated by stable periods of a few hundred million years.
The logic is that it would have been
subducted as a function of plate
tectonics billions of years ago, then encased in a forming diamond deep in the mantle, and ultimately sent back up near the surface again.
The CO2
tectonic source grew from 60 to 50 Myr BP as India
subducted carbonate - rich ocean crust while moving through the present Indian Ocean prior to its collision with Asia about 50 Myr BP [8], causing atmospheric CO2 to reach levels of the order of 1000 ppm at 50 Myr BP [9].
Therefore, where
tectonic plates collide, and one is
subducted, it must be
subducted faster as the crust shrinks.
