We often hear
about the debate of how
Subject Matter Experts meddle with Instructional Strategies and how Instructional Designers do not have the freedom to develop their own product.
In this debate we often forget
about the target audience, and finally end up creating something for the
Subject Matter Experts.
The Community of
Experts is the concept of having your
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) available to answer any questions that may arise
about work knowledge and processes.
We've all interacted with
Subject Matter Experts who are passionate
about their content domain, that is, the theory, the processes, the systems, and want the learners to know it all!
Interact early in the project to set expectations
about involvement required from
Subject Matter Experts and key stakeholders, and communicate regularly during development to avoid surprises.
In this article, we talk
about the importance of, and the practical considerations for, having multiple
Subject Matter Experts on our project.
We then sit down with
Subject Matter Experts to understand their content and start to ideate
about what possible solutions we could create to illustrate it.
For example, if you know that the

While it's hard to be an
expert on each product in the store, stores could have «
subject matter experts» — one employee who learns all
about grooming supplies and ingredients, one
about food, etc..
How much spare time each week do you have to read all the relevant credible published science papers already available for years, and read existing reports by govt / science / economic / agri bodies on the
subject matters, and read the state of current research / know how of existing anecdotal narrow focused regional / local analysis and the opinions of
experts in their particular field... and then deeply think
about all that and come to a rational and reasonable conclusion on it all?

There has been quite a bit of controversy in the past few years
about the use of
experts in court, the appropriate role of
experts in assisting judges, the
subject matters upon which
experts may testify and the ever - present problem of
experts being hired by parties yet having to remain neutral in the search for the truth.
Like Peter said, it's not necessarily
about adding lawyers but it's
about where the work should reside, whether it's a paraprofessional, a junior lawyer, a more specialized
subject matter expert or compliance
expert.
