The phrase
"subjective form" refers to expressing personal opinions, perspectives, or feelings about something, rather than stating objective facts. It represents an individual's own viewpoint on a matter, which can vary from person to person.
Full definition
This is the becoming occasion's determination of its own
subjective form of response to its given data.
They may retain their subjective role of being a means of experiencing by becoming included within a
larger subjective form.
God's experience of the world is essentially determined by efficient causation, by the conformal repetition of finite emotional experiences
in subjective form (PR 345/523).
It is only as in the past of others, or «for others,» that an occasion is both a stubborn fact and an ambiguous entity, open to interpretation
by subjective forms that future entities will assign to it.
If one relaxes the rigidity of Whiteheadian eternal objects, and interprets them as varying degrees of abstract feelings, one can have the full range of such feelings, both physical and mental,
as subjective forms of prehensions as well as their objective data.
Later, he would declare that mathematical form does not even admit emotional
subjective form for its feeling (AI 251).
These hybrid physical feelings will include feelings of propositional feelings about the new occasion, and these in turn will include propositional feelings
whose subjective forms include desire for realization.
For Whitehead the physical prehension is the object inasmuch as it reenacts the
same subjective form — or at least one aspect of it.
In this more fundamental mode, other actual entities are perceived, and the data are received not neutrally, but with emotional and
purposive subjective forms of reception.
In short, I seem to have admitted that my essay was a meaningless or at
best subjective form of argument from a discarded and discredited discipline.
It is the supreme expression of individuality: its
conformal subjective form is the freedom of enjoyment derived from the enjoyment of freedom.
But the prehensions of each phase must be different from those of the other phases by virtue of
different subjective forms, just as on Whitehead's view the prehensions of each occasion differ from those of each other by virtue of the same reason.
If prehensions are partial and require the whole occasion in order to have completely
determinate subjective form, so much more do the earlier phases need the completed occasion to exist at all.
But the «subjective forms [«of the total objective datum»] are merely contributions to the one fact which is the subjective feeling of the one occasion» (Adventures 254, emphasis added).
With respect to perceptual events,
subjective form refers «to the complex patterns we are aware of in direct experience» (PW 127/136).
Further, any actual entity involves many prehensions of objects and is essentially a process of synthesizing these various prehensions with their
various subjective forms into a novel unity with one complex form.
In God the occasion experiences an enlarged and enlarging world, which contains new occasions as they come into being, but the occasion remains the same insofar as it experiences this enlarged world in the same manner as of old, by means of the one
unique subjective form it decided upon.
But it is that unifying pattern clothed with emotion, with felt intensities derived from the
initial subjective forms of its conformal feelings.
Two
compatible subjective forms may be fused into a larger whole without altering the decision of either, by means of conceptual supplementation derived from God's infinite conceptual imagination.
The initial aim is derived from God, but although the character of the initial aim is of crucial importance to the becoming occasion, the fact that it is derived from God usually plays but a small role in its
conscious subjective form.
Rather, the prehensions have public origins, the objective data; they have
private subjective forms, based on the private aim of the actual occasion; and then the occasion, having unified its prehensions, passes back into publicity, providing data for new prehensions.
Second, it interprets the subjective aim of the actual occasion as arising more impartially out of hybrid feelings of aims (propositional feelings whose
subjective form involves appetition) entertained for the new occasion by its predecessors.
Whitehead answers the question as to the relation between continuity and quanta on the basis of discrete occasions of human experience which
inherit subjective forms conformally:
I question, however, whether every prehension obtained by genetic division has all the features of an actual entity» except its own
completed subjective form.
This mutual sensitivity of
subjective forms thus makes possible, indirectly, a reciprocal activity among the «contemporaneous» prehensions.
Whitehead introduces God's consequent nature for a number of reasons, one of them being that this integration of God's conceptual feelings with physical feelings makes propositions and consciousness as
subjective form possible, and this makes it conceivable that God possesses consciousness.
It is from a shared culture that all her material is amassed and,
given subjective form, her work is intended above all for collective contemplation and engagement.
«Thus insofar as the relationships of these feelings require an appeal to
subjective forms for their explanation, the gap must be supplied by the introduction of arbitrary laws of nature regulating the relations of intensities» (PR 447).
DE: I think he would say that a thing's subjective aim perishes with it, but that its character
as subjective form can be conformed to by the next in the chain.
Moreover, it receives a great many different ways of feeling, as it feels the feelings of a multiplicity of past actualities, and it must synthesize all these into one
final subjective form, the one final attitude it adopts towards its world (cf. AI 327).
RB: Would you want to say having the
same subjective form is what individuates the chain, and differentiates one chain from another chain?
Accordingly, the primary experience of receiving with emotional and
purposive subjective form the causal influence of other actualities tends to be only dimly illuminated in consciousness precisely because it is primary.
Or can one imagine that insofar as our universe is flooded with light from stars (suns), it is, for Whitehead, a plenum of actual entities
whose subjective form is a complex eternal object of appropriate optical properties?
Such a prehension includes the awareness that others are prehending my actions according to their
own subjective forms, which may involve feelings and ideals differing from or enhancing the multiple contrasts I am entertaining.
All prehension of past conscious thought depends upon a subsequent occasion's having a hybrid - physical prehension of these intermediate propositions as embodied in the objectified
subjective form of the finished occasion.
This subjective form is determined by the subjective aim at further integration, so as to obtain the «satisfaction» of the completed subject.
