The growing number
of substandard kennels in Oklahoma has created a «buyer beware,» market with an ever increasing number of animal welfare and consumer complaints.
The HSUS has never acknowledged that Pet Breeder Organizations in the 10 States where over 80 % of all USDA Licensed Breeders are located have «Publicly
Condemned Substandard Kennels.»
The lack of regulations leaves us with
substandard kennels in which female dogs languish in filth and suffering horribly.
At the same time Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster established a special unit in his office to
prosecute substandard kennels and unlicensed kennels.
They will be reaching out to breeders and others in the industry to develop concrete, science - based standards — standards that are meant to
bring substandard kennels into compliance with the standards the majority of breeders use on a daily basis.
Many people are asking why these facilities are leaving other states to come here, and even some breeders who have invested heavily to build kennels in Oklahoma would like to see the movement of
substandard kennels to Oklahoma slowed, as it brings low - end competition into the mix.
Some responsible breeders are so incensed at the existence of
substandard kennels that they are willing to accept these punitive licensing schemes even though the costs may limit or destroy their breeding programs.
Twenty years ago, people knew that a «puppy mill» was
a substandard kennel where unhealthy, overbred dogs were kept in horrendous conditions.
So, how do we evaluate those bills and make sure that
substandard kennels are cleaned up?
