I substituted currants for cranberries and hazelnuts for almonds as that was all I had!
If barberries are hard to find, you can
substitute currants or raisins soaked in lemon juice.
We got a little package of pancetta already chopped from Trader Joe's and
substituted the currants with a dried berry mix (cranberries, blueberries, strawberries).
Or, try
substituting currants or raisins for the chocolate chips.
I substitute currants for raisins, 1/4 cup brown teff for almonds and occasionally add 1/4 cup flax seed meal.

Just like black
currants, another rarity here, sour cherries have a unique taste and colour that make it difficult to find any good
substitute for them.
You may wish to
substitute chocolate chips for the
currants if you prefer.
I have been using your Traditional Irish Soda Bread as my mainstay (use to be the carrot cake cupcakes with added grated apple, poppy seeds, dates...) and at Easter I was missing the taste of Hot Cross Buns so I added 1 / 4cup
currants, 1tsp cinnamon, 1 / 4tsp nutmeg, dash of clove & allspice and 1 / 4cup diced candied peel to the soda bread and it was a great
substitute.
Chef's note: Feel free to
substitute citron or other dried fruits for the raisins and
currants.

substitute golden raisins for the
currants for another variation.
I used half white and half whole wheat flour, plus
substituted olive oil for some of the butter, and used raisins instead of
currants, since I had raisins on hand.

currant jam for the honey and it worked out beautifully.

substituted unsweetened cranberry juice for the orange juice, sorghum flour for 1/2 of the teff, and dried cherries for the raisins /

The original recipe of course calls for Raspberry fruit spread but my favorite is Black
Currant so that's what I used, you can
substitute your favorite flavor and any nut butter would work in place of the peanut butter.
If you decide to try out the recipe, remember that they aren't super sweet but they are super versatile — I'm sure different dried fruits like cranberries, figs, dates,
currants, cherries or blueberries would work great if you wanted to
substitute ingredients.
The only change I made was to
substitute dried
currants for the raisins, and I didn't toast the crumble.
Dried
currants (raisins can be
substituted), slivered almonds, and dried apricots fill the gaps between the apple chunks and additional apples on top create a flat surface for the pastry to sit on, which gives the tart a nicer shape when it is unmolded.
