Just a quick question, would
rice malt syrup be a suitable
substitute for the maple syrup?

To eliminate the fructose in this recipe, I
substitute 1 Tablespoon of
rice malt syrup.
I have tried putting
rice malt syrup and equal parts lemon juice and white wine vinegar as
substitutes for the ACV and agave.
Only
substitute I made was
rice malt syrup instead of maple.
Hi Sara, I have to be honest and say that I've never worked with
rice malt syrup but I would imagine that
substitute would work fine.
You can
substitute sugar or another natural sweetener, but you may need a little more because agave is sweeter than sugar and much sweeter than, for example,
rice syrup or barley
malt syrup.
I've tweaked the classic recipe to make it refined sugar free friendly (unless you count the little bit in the Weetbix)
substituting dates in the slice for the usual table sugar and
rice malt in the butter icing.
* You can
substitute another liquid sweetener in to this recipe e.g. coconut syrup, date syrup or
rice malt syrup.

substitute the honey with a different liquid sweetener such as
rice malt syrup, maple syrup or coconut syrup (which will also make this vegan - friendly).
Soy milks make good
substitutes for dairy, but most are sweetened with barley
malt or
rice syrup that contains barley.
You can absolutely
substitute with
rice malt syrup or honey and it will be delish, however the «caramel» quality will not be present.
