Well, Koster's
direction is far from consistently
subtle, or at least graceful in its subtlety, for there are times in which thoughtfulness leads to a blandness that is among the last things a
film this problematically written needs, but can not avoid, due to limp touches to the - you guessed it - writing, which I was expecting to be tighter in this ambitious epic
of only about 135 minutes.
Frantiek Vláčil's
direction feels more confident than genuinely realized, jarring between and rarely fully fleshing out his vision
of a
subtle drama and solid artistic expression, but no matter how much Vláčil's questionable touches hold the
film back, when it comes to style, there is plenty
of striking imagery and haunting plays on technical value and musicality to establish plenty
of commendable aesthetic value, and when it comes to substance, when he gains a grip on his thoughtfulness, he delivers on a piercing subtlety and grace which was a fair ways ahead
of the time.
Once again, it's the
direction that offsets writer Justin Haythe's confusion
of bloat for world - building (thought The Lone Ranger and A Cure for Wellness would have provided great notes), which over-stretches the telling
of the tale to 140 minutes and is strange for a
film that has
subtle tricks to depict long stretches
of time passing.
Thank goodness for small favors, like Shankman's relatively
subtle direction (relative only to the first
film's Shawn Levy) and the stilletto delivery
of Bonnie Hunt as Tom's wife Kate.
The Production Design (or «Art
Direction») category normally favors large - scale fantasy
films or lavish period epics, but this year's nominees reflect a
subtler batch
of contenders (which makes sense given that the subdued Lincoln won the trophy last year).
The
film's universally - pleasing story
of creation goes beyond such claims and succeeds wonderfully, with a tight screenplay, excellent performances, and
subtle but skillful
direction.
