In my experience, one
of the greatest barriers to early
nursing successes is a typical hospital birth (I can't speak for Israel, so I will speak for the US), which includes a surgical delivery for up to 40 %
of moms (depending on the hospital), lactation consultants who work only on the day shift during the week, the refusal to allow
babies to room in with mom (and then not waking mom when
baby wakes), not permitting moms to
nurse babies with jaundice (based on what?)
Nursing is both a physical and a psychological thing — if you can stay relaxed, think about the happy aspects
of parenthood and your new
baby, and remain confident about breastfeeding, you boost your chances
of success.
Through the partnership, the
nurse provides new mothers with the confidence and the tools they need not only to assure a healthy start for their
babies, but to envision a life
of stability and opportunities for
success for both mother and child.
