genre — I work on a lot
of projects that probably won't be as
successful.

It means what constitutes a
successful publication will probably continue to change form forever, and trying to force a debut
author to replicate the success
of an
author in the same
genre from 10 years ago will be ultimately disappointing, possibly destructive, and a waste
of time, when what we need to be doing with them is playing on their strengths and our strengths and the reality
of the market.
On the other hand, getting together with fellow
authors in your
genre to do a joint sale or promotion can be very
successful, as I found out teaming up with other members
of the «Official Chick Lit Group» on Facebook.
Comprehensive resources like
Author Earnings» quarterly analyses, the only full picture
of traditionally published and indie book sales, can give you important insights into what price points for print and e-editions are
successful in your
genre.
If you write fiction, romance or children's books, take a look at
authors that compete in your particular
genre and follow the lead
of the most
successful.
If box sets
of a single
author were doing well, the multi-
author bundle could be the
successful mantra for
authors who share a common
genre or theme.
But the best advice for anyone who is just starting out would be to write the best story that you possibly can and study the marketing
of successful authors is in your
genre only once you have a finished product that you are proud
of.

of my favorite ways to find key hashtags that your ideal reader uses is to look at what hashtags other
successful authors in your
genre are using.
