If your dog associates the crate with a negative experience, then you will not be able to
successfully crate train your dog.
It could take more or less time to
successfully crate train your dog depending on their personality and anxiety level.
Successfully crate training dogs, (and crate training puppies) can be done very simply through the natural and gentle methods I explain in Puppy Potty Training.

crate training indoors, and the
dog was fine left alone.
I considered both
dogs to be reliably
crate trained, and both
dogs had
crated successfully, in soft
crates, in similar situations, prior to their escape attempts.
Sometimes panicky pups can be calmed by wearing a Thundershirt when they go in the
crate — but if your
dog hurts himself in any way trying to escape from the
crate, if he
successfully escapes a sturdy
crate, or if you have any other reason to believe that your
dog is excessively stressed by the
training, discontinue using the
crate immediately unless you have the personal guidance of an experienced
dog trainer.
