Many women who have home births get transferred to a hospital anyway, usually because the labour is taking too long or because they need pain medication
such as an epidural.
What You Should Know about Epidurals, Pitocin, and Other Birth Interventions: Impact on Breastfeeding and Perinatal Mental Health In North America, birth interventions,
such as epidurals and Pitocin, are very common.
Medications
such as an epidural anesthesia and others have their time and place in birth.
You will probably receive a regional anesthetic,
such as an epidural, rather than the general anesthesia that once made women unconscious during the delivery.
Also, the medications,
such as the epidural, do affect women differently.
There are pain medications that are available,
such as the epidural, that may ease some of your fear.
If you have medication during labor and delivery,
such as an epidural, the drugs in your system do not magically go away once baby is born, unfortunately.
Thousands of women who underwent home births using midwives had lower rates of medical interventions
such as epidural pain relief, forceps delivery and Caesarean section than similar women who give birth in hospitals.
Do you want pain management,
such as an epidural?
However, many women feel that it would be silly to still undergo that pain when we now have access to safe pain relievers
such as epidurals.
The study also found that women who delivered babies at a higher gestational age (further along in their pregnancy) were less likely to develop PPD, and women who did not have anesthesia,
such as an epidural, during delivery had an increased risk.
While some women prefer natural childbirth, others opt for pain management techniques,
such as an epidural or medications taken.
We used reliable methods to assess the quality of the evidence and looked at seven key outcomes: preterm birth (birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy); the risk of losing the baby in pregnancy or in the first month after birth; spontaneous vaginal birth (when labour was not induced and birth not assisted by forceps; caesarean birth; instrumental vaginal birth (births using forceps or ventouse); whether the perineum remained intact, and use of regional analgesia (
such as epidural).
Over the course of this online childbirth class, we will discuss: Anatomy and physiology, Stages of Labor, pain management options including: natural childbirth techniques and medicated options
such as epidurals.
Pitocin is given to a majority of mothers to speed the process, and when the process continues to take too long, it requires more interventions,
such as epidurals, more pitocin and far too often, unnecessary cesarean sections.

such as epidurals, narcotic pain medication, labor induction and augmentation, cesarean section, episiotomy, and others.
I agree, of course, about violent interventions, but one hopes you would also be as concerned and vocal about other forms of violence towards birthing women
such as epidural denial and forced rooming in.
I argued that interventions
such as epidurals, forceps, episiotomies, premature rupturing of the amniotic sac, etc.were all GOOD things and posed no significant risk to mom or baby.
If you have decided on a medicated birth, your doctor will present you with a range of options for pain medications

such as epidurals and inductions, will not have a negative effect on her labor, her baby, or her baby's ability to breastfeed.
Emergency care is ~ 1 % which means that most cases in need of transfer non-emergent (augmentation such as pitocin / pain relief

While we are fortunate here to have medical interventions available,

Commonly used ways to help manage pain include breathing techniques

You know, there are side effects to
epidurals,
such as breathing problems for the newborn, not to mention the way it increases the chance of other interventions.
Increasing the length of the second stage of labor to two hours for multiparas, three hours for nulliparas and even longer in certain cases,
such as the use of an
epidural.
Some medications you were given during labor,
such as Demerol or medicine found in the
epidural, can cause your baby to have trouble latching on to your breast, which can in turn cause your body to make less milk.
What is not yet clear is the relative contribution to birth outcomes of health professionals» attitudes, continuity of carer, midwife managed or community based care, and implementation of specific practices (
such as continuous emotional and physical support throughout labour, use of immersion in water to ease labour pain, encouraging women to remain upright and mobile, minimising use of
epidural analgesia, and home visits to diagnose labour before admission to birth centre or hospital).
Are there any situations that my birth partner / spouse won't be able to be with me (
such as getting an
epidural or preparing for a c / section)?
Many of the
epidural side effects mentioned below are not improved with low - dose or walking
epidurals, because women using these techniques may still receive a substantial total dose of local anesthetic, especially when continuous infusions and / or patient - controlled boluses (single large doses) are used.34 The addition of opiate drugs in
epidurals or CSEs can create further risks for the mother,
such as pruritus (itching) and respiratory depression (see below).
A birth plan is designed to let your doctor and the hospital know your wishes in regards to your plans for when labor begins (
such as, no
epidural or episiotomy).
Davidson also suggests bringing up «anything specific about your birth plans —
such as experience with twins, home birth, VBAC,
epidurals, or inductions.»
More than half of those get spine - numbing
epidurals and about 45 percent receive narcotics
such as Demerol or Stadol.
A recent study comparing women's choices of pain relief in midwife - led and consultant - led units in Ireland showed that when women were offered other options
such as hydrotherapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, fewer women chose
epidural analgesia [9].
When you add in the other reasons not to get an
epidural such as slowing labor, the risk of c - section is greater when you receive an
epidural.
But with the help of birthing classes, you can learn about natural methods for pain relief,
such as breathing techniques, massage and acupuncture — and get a more informed idea
as to whether an
epidural is your first choice, last resort or something in between.
For this reason I would like to avoid interventions
such as internal monitoring and
epidural / spinal anesthesia unless absolutely necessary and would like to maintain freedom to move around
as I wish
as much
as possible
as I have a fear of feeling «restrained».
Studies have shown over and over again that doulas reduce the percentage of interventions
such as cesareans,
epidurals, pitocin and instrument assisted births.
Women who have a CNM with them during labor and delivery have fewer interventions,
such as continuous electronic fetal monitoring,
epidurals, and episiotomies, without any difference in the outcomes for women or their babies.
In another project with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, we're also working to create a larger bank of virtual hospital experiences that could include things
such as walking into the operating room, learning what it feels like to have an
epidural or nerve block, or go into radiology.
Maternal inflammatory states and diseases
such as type 1 diabetes can increase risk of surgical birth,
as can interventions
such as ultrasound, 14 monitoring, and the
epidural.15 Without vaginal transfer of mom's flora, the baby misses out on the most important inoculation.
A woman's hormonal physiology is further disturbed by practices
such as induction, the use of pain killers and
epidurals, caesarean surgery, and separation of mother and baby after birth.
Contrast enhancement is often observed in the endplates of the affected vertebrae, and inflammation in the surrounding muscles may also be highlighted.2, 6 Compressive lesions that can potentially be surgically corrected,
such as disc protrusion / extrusion, vertebral subluxations, fractures, and concurrent
epidural abscess, can be easily identified.
