Immigration evokes both
economic and cultural
anxieties in particularly powerful ways, which is why it has become
such a volatile issue.

such as Rod Serling's Night Gallery, as well as incorporating French existentialism and absurdist dialogue, Gaines, Gordon and Segade appear in videos in which, among other things, an unemployed woman romances a supernatural being; a man turns to witch doctors following a health insurance hassle; and art curators trapped in an executive board room curate — literally — nightmares drawn from today's
economic anxieties.
However, while the issue of immigration in the US (as in other countries) has traditionally been regarded as a political or
economic issue, more recently there is a recognition — in some quarters at least — that there are social and human issues,
such as the separation of families, the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, racial
anxieties, national identity and perceptions that traditions are under threat.
Understanding the aetiology of mental health disorders,
such as
anxiety and mood disorders, is vital to relieving the substantial emotional and
economic burdens associated with their onset and treatment (Kessler & Ustun 2008).
To further train our students and assist those who need help, we recently launched Project Strengthen, where a student is paired with a staff therapist to help meet the demand of high quality care to underserved individuals and families who suffer from multiple mental health disorders (
such as
anxiety and substance abuse) alongside socio -
economic and cultural barriers to much - needed care.
