The resulting sense of pride and belonging among his students, who often felt alienated from the mainstream, became an integral part of his work with these students — K.O.S, the Kids of Survival — which could be seen as sustaining a dialog between members of the group as well as with interlocutors of the past such as W.E.B. DuBois or George Orwell.

It's a trend reflected in Jon Day's essay «Please Do Touch» which appeared in the December issue of Apollo, as well as in forthcoming books such as Joe Moshenska's Feeling Pleasures: The Sense of Touch in Renaissance England or Hans Ulrich Obrist and Tom McCarthy's Mapping It Out, which charts the imaginations of contributors ranging from contemporary artists to science - fiction writers.

The texts include literary passages as well as transcriptions from political prisoners in besieged cities such as Aleppo, turning testimonials into visual forms and producing a sense of simultaneously urgent appeal and timeless, collective memory.

My sense is that a better approach is to recognize, from the start, the reality that shifting energy norms, even as coal remains a core energy source, will be a process unfolding over decades, and making sure that legislation, while pushing standards for cutting energy waste and pollution, also focuses on support in all the arenas that matter to building a sustained energy quest — including education to create the intellectual capacity for such an undertaking and sustained and increased direct support for basic inquiry in science and technology — an area where there's been bipartisan disinterest in federal investment for decades.

In 2008, the Bush administration released a new proposal for fuel economy standards that were slightly better but still far too low; they were determined through a fatally flawed analysis employing numerous assumptions defying common sense and the law, such as a prediction that gas will cost $ 2.36 per gallon in 2020 and an assumption that technological solutions available now can't be employed by automakers a few years from now.
