Researchers used tissue and blood samples to show that the gammopathy (a precursor to myeloma)
in both
mice and patients with Gaucher disease is triggered by specific lipids, and that the antibodies made by
tumor cells
in nearly a third of myeloma patients are directed against
such lipids.
Several studies have supported a role for cancer stem cells
in the aggressive brain
tumors called glioblastoma, but those studies involved inducing human
tumors to grow
in mice, and as
such their relevance to cancer
in humans has been questioned.
Unaltered cells created
tumors in all seven
mice injected with
such cells, but when cells missing ALKBH5 were used, they caused
tumors in only 43 percent (six out of 14) of
mice.
Further,
such treatment significantly suppressed
tumor growth
in mice.
Next - generation NSG models that support human myeloid cell proliferation,
such as the NSG - SGM3
mouse, can now provide
in vivo conditions that better mimic the natural
tumor environment.
This causes genomic instability
in developing immune cells and,
in the absence of a working
tumor suppressor protein
such as p53, an aggressive form of lymphoma develops
in mice.
Now we want to extend this technology to animal models,
such as cancer bearing
mice, to verify its practical use
in different types of
tumors,» explains Park.
Additionally, organizations
such as Freiburg - based Oncotest, a company founded and directed by Fiebig, and the Jackson Laboratory
in Bar Harbor, Maine, provide access to a wide range of PDX
mice made from donated
tumor tissue.
To answer basic research questions like these, investigators study bacteria, viruses, fungi, animal cells and human cells (both healthy and cancerous) grown
in the lab, and
tumors in animals,
such as
mice and rats.
Higher serum levels of pro-inflammatory factors
such as interleukin - 6 and
tumor necrosis factor are found
in aged
mice.
It should be noted, however, that while a study on senescent cell ablation
in genetically normal
mice would provide at least some evidence on the effect of senescent cells (and their ablation) on promoting cancer, even
such a study would likely show less effect than could be anticipated
in a large mammal model, since even normally - aging
mice rarely suffer metastatic disease to the extent of aging humans, as sheer primary
tumor volume is generally sufficient to be fatal to
mice.
Similar to the
mouse study above, another group looked at skin
tumors (squamous cell carcinoma)
in a group of
mice prone to
such cancers, to see if acute stress could modify this.
Administers veterinary staff approved supportive care
such as dietary additives, supplemental environmental enrichment for hiding and chewing, heating pads, and subcutaneous fluids to distressed
mice and rats
in studies perusing new treatments for brain
tumors, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, and emphysema and genetic studies charting the development of lung cancer and diabetes.
