Some observers have suggested several Atlantic provinces may soon band together and proceed as a unified front rather than individually
sue the tobacco companies.
As an example: When Virginia
sued the tobacco companies and was awarded the huge settlements they set up a commission to reinvest that money in the tobacco farming areas in order to help the economy there (since it was dependent on tobacco farming).
But when state and U.S. prosecutors successfully
sued the tobacco companies for systematically misleading the public about the risks their products caused, no one's free speech rights were infringed.
Federal and state prosecutors eventually
sued the tobacco companies.

tobacco companies have been successfully
sued for many million of dollars, on the basis that
tobacco is dangerous and addictive and the
companies denied this and hid evidence of the dangers from the public for many years, as below.

sue and put the same pressure on the oil
companies that we did with
tobacco companies and create some kind of massive settlement,» he said.
