You don't add
sugar but if you
do some research on the
sugar content of
dates, you will find that it's extremely high!
Note that the
dates do have a lot of
sugar, but they have a lot of fiber and phytonutrients, too, which makes them a much better option than
sugar (and they add a rich flavor).
It's totally fine to eat, but if you don't like the looks of the white stuff or if you want the
date to be softer you can wrap it in a damp paper towel and microwave it for 5 seconds, the
date will plump up and the
sugar will be absorbed back into the
date.
It
does contain a decent amount of protein (8.6 g) and fibre (5g) but also a lot of
sugar, in the form of rice syrup,
dates, chocolate chips, glucose syrup and barley malt.
If you don't
do well with coconut (or if you just don't have any on hand), you can replace the coconut
sugar with some

do contain fiber, potassium and other nutrients that granulated
sugar doesn't.
