There was a time when a big, shiny, new
superhero blockbuster felt like a major movie event.

superheroes have reached the screen before, but seeing the collective weight of Marvel / Disney thrown behind a
blockbuster like «Black Panther» still
feels like a cultural watershed, one that the movie exuberantly embraces.
• Most scenes in modern
blockbusters —
superhero movies, comic book stories, FX - driven tentpoles, etc. —
feel both perfunctory and dead on arrival.

Captain America: Winter Soldier artfully dodges nearly every typical
superhero movie problem (as well as general sequel problems) with a stunning grasp of mood, total commitment to a «square» character, a smart choice of villain, and thrilling action scenes that
feel authentically dangerous (a complete rarity in
blockbusters) rather than like stop - and - gawk «setpieces» with no actual stakes.
The character's introduction in Captain America: Civil War (more on that later) is built upon here as the film does a fantastic job of showing audiences Peter's teenage earnestness that it makes it
feel more like a coming - of - age film than a
superhero blockbuster.
Something of a small miracle, «The Way Way Back» is such a refreshing, smartly enjoyable reprieve from the summer movie season's barrage of
superhero fare and big - budget
blockbusters that you
feel blue when it must come to an end.
But the scenes
feel especially prescient, and inadvertently scathing, because of the
superhero blockbuster that came before it.
As a result, Homecoming
feels less like a
superhero blockbuster and more like what would happen if John Hughes was bitten by an irradiated spider before making The Breakfast Club.
In a clever bit of Comic - Con - minded programming, the IFC Center will host a pair of midnight screenings of Burton's 1992
superhero blockbuster, which, in our post-Christopher-Nolan DC Comics cinema landscape,
feels even more singular than ever before.
