In other words, rather than
the superstitious villagers burning the witch because they feared she had brought some plague upon them, they ALWAYS did it strictly for personal power and prestige?
Or did you simply warp your sweeping statement regarding a bunch of
superstitious villagers into a political encapsulation merely so that you could then say:
Feared by the nearby
superstitious villagers as cursed creatures who prey upon the lost, their secrets have been kept from civilization and remain on their hallowed ground.
