Instead of subsidising formula companies to boost exports or attract investment, allowing them to influence health and nutrition policies or involving them as partners
in education initiatives, governments should ensure all inappropriate marketing is ended, and invest
in policies to ensure
mothers get the
support they need to
breastfeed and care
for their babies.
On the other hand, maternity leave, which is very important
for breastfeeding support, is well - established
in Germany: 14 weeks fully paid maternity leave (6 weeks before the birth, 8 weeks after the birth or 12 weeks
for preterm or multiple birth), 12 months parental leave with 65 % of the
mother's salary (partly paid
for by health insurance companies and partly by employers) and unpaid parental leave until the child is 3 years old.
The WHO Global Strategy recognises that
for breastfeeding to be successful
mothers and families need the right
support along the whole course of
breastfeeding — from giving birth
in a Baby Friendly hospital, to going home to find skilled local
support from midwives, health visitors, GPs, and
mother support groups throughout their communities.
Although Health Canada's policy statements recommend that infants be exclusively
breastfed for the first six months of life and sustained
breastfeeding to two years and beyond, adequate
support systems need to be
in place
for mothers to achieve optimal
breastfeeding practices.
Her interest and love
for supporting nursing
mothers and their families to meet their own
breastfeeding goals started while she was a Maternal Child Health Nurse with the Visiting Nurse Association of of Boston
in 2000.
When there are problems with
breastfeeding,
support by health care workers with a background
in lactation
support, such as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) also has to be paid
for by the
mothers themselves.
If a
mother has been raised
in an environment (or is currently living
in one) that shames women
for breastfeeding, or shames their bodies
in general, she might not feel comfortable or
supported in her decision to
breastfeed.

Mothers need

Some contributing factors are
mothers who must return to workplaces which don't
support breastfeeding with long lunches to return home to
breastfeed or flexible schedules which allow
for frequent pumping, and insurance companies which don't cover lactation consultants or breast pumps, and,
in a small percentage of cases, health issues with the
mother or baby.
