Canadians who view foreign control
of the economy as a threat to national security are less willing to
support trade agreements with Asian countries.
A recent survey conducted by the Asia Pacific Foundation shows a slim majority
of Canadians (55 per cent)
support the pursuit
of a free -
trade agreement and that 64 per cent are concerned Canada will become more susceptible to economic and political pressure from Beijing.
This was demonstrated clearly in the summer
of 2005 when the Central American Free
Trade Agreement (CAFTA) was stalled in Congress for lack
of support.
Hillary Clinton — who once lauded the deal as the «gold standard»
of trade agreements — has spent months trying to convince nervous progressives that she has no intention
