This year, I am part of the inaugural Commonwealth Teach Plus Policy Fellowship, which allows me to work with outstanding teacher leaders, specifically in helping Massachusetts districts effectively use Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) funds to encourage and
support teacher leadership initiatives.

District administrators and other leaders of
initiatives external to the school, need to develop principals» understanding about the kinds of
support teacher leadership work requires and work with them to get that
support in place.
Highlights of this
initiative include the development and
support of a collaborative framework that empowers administrators, coaches, and
teacher leaders as they work together; the creation and implementation of school - level action plans and follow - up activities that integrate ongoing school - based professional development activities; and the institution of
leadership learning meetings to share implementation efforts.

It prepares district and school administrators and / or
leadership teams to: • Make data actionable and competency - based • Use data to bring coherence across improvement
initiatives & maximize their impact • Build a system - wide culture of data - literacy and student - focused teaching and learning • Create capacity to collect evidence needed to validate successful implementation and gauge impact on achievement Leaders will learn what it takes to initiate,
support, and sustain the meaningful and productive use of data throughout an organization — with an emphasis on how to
support teachers» use of data.
If
teachers shared in administering the school, however, administrators could focus on more substantive issues of
leadership, such as cultivating meaningful school - community relationships,
supporting teacher initiatives, connecting their schools with the world, and cultivating partnerships with businesses and arts - related venues.
The Teach to Lead
initiative — which aims to leverage
teachers in
leadership roles while allowing them to remain in classrooms — has grown through the
support of 75 organizations, including ASCD.
