Supporting Access to Justice for Aboriginal Women Dealing with Violence was funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario.
If the public interest warranta any allocation of lawyer licensing fees to
supporting access to justice for people of modest means, surely that would rank above some of the ways the Law Societies are currently spending the money collected today in lawyer licensing levies.

Public interest work can allow you
to achieve greater goals beyond earning a paycheck, such as working
to effect societal change,
supporting an important public cause, or providing equal
access to justice for needy individuals and organizations.
DLA Piper was the standout firm in the CSR / diversity initiative of the year category
for its
Access to Justice project, which seeks
to tackle the huge cuts
to legal aid in the UK by offering pro bono legal
support and advice
to marginalised and disadvantaged individuals in communities around the country.
The results of two recent studies in the U.S. have used public opinion data
to suggest that increasing public
support for access to civil
justice is a promising way
to increase government funding.
For now, it is a fascinating look at how well (or how poorly) states are doing at
supporting access to justice.
The site was built by the National Center
for Access to Justice at Cardozo Law School, with
support from Pfizer Inc. and the Pfizer Legal Alliance of 15 law firms, as well as from Deloitte and MSDS.

While it is perhaps a small point, I suggest that using more inclusive language
to describe those among us who are not lawyers, and especially those who are not lawyers but work
to support the rule of law and advocate
for those who have no voice, could be effective in finding creative solutions
to break down some of the barriers that impede
access to justice in Canada.
[1] The argument is that if the civil legal aid system [2] is viewed by the middle class as a program that could benefit them if they encounter trouble, rather than being only
for the poor, a wider segment of the public will have a stake in
access to justice and they will
support higher levels of public funding.
In fact, as part of my job with Pro Bono Net, a nonprofit that works with legal aid organizations, pro bono programs, and courts
to improve
access to justice through increasing volunteerism, collaboration, and effective use of technology, I've had the opportunity
to work with Pro Bono Law Ontario and seen how adding technology
to their service delivery (both as
support for their programs and as information
for the general public) has allowed them
to be more effective and efficient in their work.
We also thank the
Access to Justice Initiative of the U.S. Dept. of
Justice for their outstanding help in identifying potential other governmental
support for civil legal aid.
Aaron Street: I guess with today's conversation with Nicole about technology design and
access to justice, it's another good opportunity
for us
to step back and kind of chat about what this
access to justice goal is all about and how our listeners and the small firm legal community in general can
support it in a way that makes sense.
For several years now we've seen great rewards
supporting public libraries as invaluable intermediaries in the mission
to enhance
justice access.
The main goals of the
Supporting Families Initiative are
to make it easier
for families
to gain
access to the family
justice system and
to encourage compliance with financial
support, custody and
access obligations.
The report used data from Statistics Canada
to gauge how each province faired in public safety, costs and resources, fairness and
access to justice,
support for victims and efficiency.
It calls
for support for access to justice research in order
to promote evidence - based policy choices.
In her inaugural statement, Lavin pledged
support for affordable
access to justice, and said the profession faced a «unique moment» with so many new leaders taking post, and should make the most of it
to «think creatively» on how best
to serve the public.
But before leaving the category of proceedings into which magistrates» court child
support work falls:

Access to Justice course students read about and discuss the barriers faced by women experiencing domestic violence while also living in poverty, struggling with precarious immigration status, and
supporting their children.

Many of the failures
to address and remedy the conditions in which Aboriginal women and girls live fall under BC's constitutional responsibility, including education, housing, public transportation,
access to justice, and
support for families and children.
Though they may be providing
access to justice services and
supports for different reasons (whether
for profit,
for the public good or as a public service more generally) the resulting innovations show great promise
to enhance
access to justice and reduce gaps.
Support for the individual issues part of a class action is also becoming an
access to justice problem.
