In what I'm pretty sure is a first, the Best
Supporting Actor category is the first acting
category ever in which all five nominees already have at least one acting Oscar
on their mantle.
I feel confident that Brie Larson will win Best Actress here for Room and Idris Elba will put a win
on the board for Beasts of No Nation in Best
Supporting Actor, but many of the other
categories could go multiple ways.

Why a person is nominated for a
supporting actor or actress Oscar often has a lot to do with riding coattails, which probably explains why it takes so long for awards prognosticators to pin down the nominees in these two
categories: It's all about waiting to see which films catch fire at the box office — or
on the blogosphere, where most Oscar campaigns seem to be launched nowadays.

The Globes will continue to nominate Slater for their crazy, all over the place
supporting actor on television
category (which combines
supporting actors from dramas and comedies and limited series and made - for - TV movies), even when he's brushing aside nearly everybody from Game of Thrones in order to do so.

Supporting categories despite Michael Keaton winning Best
Actor from the New York Film Critics Circle and Mark Ruffalo arguably having just as much a say as a lead.
Mudbound is nominated four times, but they're a long shot in Adapted Screenplay and
Supporting actor, and we're all agreed
on rooting for Roger Deakins in Best Cinematography (though a win for Mudbound «s Rachel Morrison there would mean the first win by a woman in that
category ever, so rooting interests abound), so it's Mary in Best Original Song as Netflix's great narrative hope.
