character who may be playing both sides of the fence.
As Howard, the great John Goodman creates one of the most chilling screen personalities in recent memory; having spent the last decade energising
support parts in Argo, The Artist, Flight and Inside Llewellyn Davis, the actor gets to dominate a film with subtle, multi-tiered
character work.
Waititi plays most of this as comedy (An encounter with a large, wild pig is a decidedly unnerving exception), and it
works in that regard without overwhelming us with the
characters» idiosyncrasies (Most of those belong to the
supporting characters, who never overstay their welcome, anyway).
These performers
work well together and are
supported by fantastic actors like Rob Riggle, who recites his lines with enough energy to make his stock
character, a clueless gym teacher, feel fresh.
Although all of these
characters were revealed in award - worthy performances, they were also shaped by the

Even the
supporting male roles just seem to
work in tandem with the main cast, adding spice and developing them into well - rounded

There's also a fantastic turn from Metcalf, so consistently underused on screen, who in a just world would be an automatic best
supporting actress front - runner for her finely observed

Daniel Wu as Lu Ren
worked as a
supporting character to Lara; funny at moments, he facilitates a great

Wright has filled in the rest of
supporting cast with actors doing some strong

As much as I love Knocked Up, I don't think Rudd and Mann's
characters really stand out, nor would they
work in anything other than
supporting roles.
Certainly it isn't because it's a fitting ending to the journey of Bilbo, as he's not even involved in the majority of this film, instead taking a back seat to a host of
characters that are either greatly beefed up from their small
supporting roles in the original Tolkien
work, or, as in the case of lovelorn wood elf Tauriel (Lilly, The Long Weekend) and handsome dwarf Kili (Turner, The Mortal Instruments), complete fabrications injected to put in a love story for, presumably, the young female set.
Hawkes is a talented
character actor who has been
working for years, in many ways the template of a
supporting actor nomination (that will certainly lead him to even greener pastures).
Whatever project (s) Guzmán and Garcia
work on next, I hope that the stories and
supporting characters are more developed than they are here.

work nearly as well.
At least this was a chance for some
supporting characters to show off their talents, such as Rasmus Hardiker (who played Courtney), and again, Justin Theroux, but they could only do so much with what they were given to
work with.
Such a mix has
worked for Burton in the past, but this time it doesn't blend well seemingly due to the fact that the lead
character is not always likable (he goes from making jokes to killing people in various scenes) and the
supporting characters are undernourished.
We've got a
character who ignores his own responsibilities, cheerfully allows his wife to
work endlessly to
support their family of four, and spends thousands of dollars to throw himself a party.
Part of the reason that Notting Hill was welcomed by more acceptance than most Julia Roberts rom - coms is that Michell
worked the film out of a handful of intriguing
characters, from the lead players to the
supporting players.
Gyllenhaal's typically strong
work as the central
character goes a long way towards confirming the movie's success, while the movie's periphery players provide better - than - average
support and background color.

work, for it features his daughter and other

I think they're all underrated, talented performers, and ever since seeing Barinholtz
work his magic as a charmingly weird
supporting character in The Mindy Project, I've been pulling for him to lock down some more starring roles in big studio comedies.
Like all of Tarantino's best
characters, this one owes much to the performance, and Robert Downey Jr. was frankly robbed of a
supporting actor nomination for his

Not everything
works (a running gag where Bobby's beverage bottles keep on breaking before he can drink is especially lame), but for the most part this section of the film is a demented hoot, galvanized by some great

These complaints are pretty minor, and are mostly just nitpicks; the

works well within its scope.
Excellent locale
work, a brilliant adaptation by Egoyan of the book, great
supporting characters and a disturbingly haunting accident scene all add up to one of 1997's best hidden gem films.
