Other women have been successful without the need for any support from other women so see no value in
supporting women lawyer associations.
While our membership is focused on
supporting women lawyers with children, we must support all parents in their caregiving roles if we truly want to achieve gender equity in the legal profession.
Each of these recent programs is an example of small but important steps taken to
support women lawyers to remain in the practice of law.

In addition to individual law firm initiatives, some bar associations are starting various efforts to
support non-practicing
women lawyers who want to return to law practice.
One measure of firmwide
support for
women at any firm is the presence of
women lawyers in positions of leadership.
In our larger offices, Hartford, Boston, and Stamford, our
women lawyers have hosted a number of networking events, such as wine tastings and a chocolate - making class, to which
women contacts and clients from the area are invited; local nonprofit organizations are honored at these events and attendees bring in - kind donations to
support the charities.
This book is not just for
lawyers but for men in any organization, and the advice it offers will be helpful to all men who are in positions to actively
support and sponsor
women.
Firms can promote engagement in spite of these obstacles by presenting an exciting vision for the future; offering meaningful long - term alternatives to partnership; elucidating criteria for becoming partner; providing
support and resources to associates who desire partnership; and advancing
women and minority
lawyers into partnership and leadership positions.
Our ongoing efforts to address gender parity include establishing a mentorship program aimed at
supporting young
lawyers as well as creating both a
Woman's Vice-President position and a
Women's Committee aimed at tackling gender issues encountered in our justice system.
We are a nation of laws, yet we do not provide legal
support in any comprehensive way for the millions of people who can not afford a
lawyer when they really need one — victims of natural disasters, battered
women, children fleeing persecution in their home countries, and many others.

Women in Law@Torys initiative provides a structured network of
support that reinforces the firm's commitment to the success of its female
lawyers, both professionally and personally.
At the conference, we will discuss how

women who have achieved professional excellence in their field and influenced other
women to pursue legal careers,

women in career advancement or opened doors for
women lawyers in a variety of job settings that historically were closed to them.
Even more to the point, domestic violence
lawyers make
women safer by using legal avenues, such as child
support actions, that reduce a victim's financial dependence on a batterer and eliminate one obstacle to ending a dangerous relationship.
A third tip is to encourage
women lawyers with children to offer on - going
support to each other.
Women — and increasingly men who are also parents — need on - going
support to manage the many demands on a
lawyer's time.
