Sign our petition today and demand that schools have the funding needed to
keep teachers in the classroom,
support staff in our schools and provide the quality education that our students deserve.
But I have a plea for those who fixate on how to dismiss
teachers: Fixate instead on how we nurture,
support and
keep them.
And what I'm wondering is: If you're elected president, will you
support and fund the sorts of initiatives that Reconnecting McDowell is there for, that the Coalition for Community Schools
supports, and the American Federation of
Teachers nationally — the wraparound services, the things that address the whole child needs, that
keep students from coming to school prepared to learn?
Support from leadership will help
keep teachers from becoming disenchanted.
While this approach has some benefits in
keeping kids on task, Oppenheimer seems to
support it primarily because it moves the
teacher back to center stage and eliminates the inherent messiness of allowing students some measure of control over their own learning.
